A WILDLIFE spot plagued with trash has been cleared in a mammoth clean up.
More than five tons of rubbish was removed from the Rhyl Cut when 20 Keep Wales Tidy volunteers descended on the site.
Gareth Jones, Project Officer for Keep Wales Tidy, said: “We cleared from Vale Road almost down to Coleg Llandrillo and filled three 15 yard skips, the biggest we can use. There’s a lot of wildlife there, frogs, tadpoles and ducks and moorhens nesting, and possibly water voles, which are protected, so we had to be quite careful. It could be a really nice place.”
Mr Jones said that the team did a good job over two days, despite some unpleasant discoveries.
He said: “Unfortunately there were a number of mattresses and beds with rats living in them.”
Chris Ruane, MP for the Vale of Clwyd, thanked those who took part, including volunteers at the Community Pay Back team.
He said: “It clearly wasn’t a pleasant job and by the sounds of it, it was potentially dangerous. I would urge anyone who lives in that area to report anyone they see dumping rubbish into the Cut to Denbighshire County Council or North Wales Police.
“The Cut could be a valuable local environmental resource and it shouldn’t be used as a dumping ground for unwanted rubbish and household items.”
Mr Ruane also slammed the actions of the flytippers responsible for the mess.
He said: “It is unsightly and is attracting vermin to the area and it needs to be stopped and I hope whoever is doing it is caught and punished.”
