Rhos crossing campaign one step closer

A SEVEN year campaign to make Rhos on Sea roads safer for schoolchildren has reached a landmark milestone.

Residents in the village have been hard at work fundraising with the goal of putting a crossing near the junction of Penrhyn Avenue and Church Road, after the Assembly Government rejected a bid for one last year.

Last week a cheque for more than £10,000 was presented to Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Cllr Joan Vaughan, to help work get underway.

Cllr Vaughan said: “I’m delighted to accept this cheque on the Council's behalf. Campaigners have worked hard to raise this amount of for Penrhyn Avenue road safety measures.”

Lyndsay French, who has been spearheading campaigns for road safety around Ysgol Llandrillo yn Rhos for many years, was thrilled with the enthusiasm the community have shown, and hoped work on a crossing would be starting soon.

She said: “They have the money now and hopefully we'll see something happening within the next month. We’ve been holding car washes, tombolas and raffles. I did a sponsored swim with my son and a local resident. And we’ve had so many donations - large and small.
“I’ve been campaigning for road safety for seven years, but trying to get the crossing has only been 12 months - and the fundraising only took five. Little donations here and there all add up.
“It won't just benefit school children. It will help elderly residents and the disabled as well.”

Cllr Roger Parry, who has supported Lindsay throughout the campaign, said road safety was an important issue in Rhos on Sea.

He added: “It’s a real achievement to get this going and it’s taken a lot of work - but we've done it.”
