ENTERTAINING and original songs, top class musicianship and a perfect venue combined to make Cerys Matthews’ ‘Don’t Look Down’ tour gig at Theatr Colwyn a totally enjoyable experience.
Treating us to an eclectic mix of material from Celtic favourites to Catatonia, majoring, of course, on her excellent solo albums, Cerys was totally at ease in this wonderful, intimate setting.
Fellow musicians Kevin Teel (guitar, pedal steel and mandolin), and Mason Neely (drums, piano, guitar, mandolin - and anything else!) provided solid yet sympathetic backing.
Indeed, Cerys is no slouch when it comes to musical instruments, playing guitar, toy xylophone and harmonica during an excellent set list, which included The Galway Shawl, Arglwydd Dyma Fi, Open Roads, Road Rage, as well as Arlington Road and Oranges to Florida from her new album Don’t Look Down, also available in Welsh, and selling well on her independent music label.
She was genuinely pleased that her show was the fastest selling event at Theatr Colwyn, so let’s hope this is the first of many times that audiences will be able to enjoy such events in the future.
Theatr Colwyn really seems to be on a roll. It’s success as a cinema and receiving theatre is wonderful to see after many years of under-funding and pure hard graft. Here’s to future success!
