When it comes to days out for all the family, the north of England has an embarrassment of riches. From football museums and adrenaline-packed roller coaster rides to stunning aquariums and spectacular shows, you'll easily find something for everyone.

Liverpool Football Club Museum and Tour.

The city of Liverpool is a great day out for the whole family, or you could always stay for a longer period of time at one of the city’s varied accommodation options. There is plenty see and do around the city, the Beatles tour, the yellow duck marine ride, or even the Funtown play centre. But our pick has to be the Anfield Stadium Tour.

Even if you're not a fan of this particular club, the chance to see the inner workings of a Premier league team and behind the scenes at this historic stadium is well worth the price of admission. Both the tour and the museum are fascinating for children of all ages.

Tickets for the tour and museum cost £15 for adults and £9 for under 16s, while family tickets are available for £41. For a fee of £35 per adult and £18 per child, you can take the tour with real-life Liverpool legend as your guide.

For the chance to spot some of the current crop of top players, choose the match day tour option. You can visit the museum seven days a week, between 9am-5pm with last admission at 4pm. If there is a match on, you can only enter the museum up to an hour before kick-off.

Chester Zoo.

Britain's most popular wildlife attraction and listed as one of the best 15 zoos in the world by the prestigious Forbes magazine, Chester zoo has an animal collection that is both large and diverse enough to ensure everyone in the family will have a favourite.

With more than 8,000 animals on a site stretching over 110 acres, there's plenty to see. You can also enjoy education talks and take tours to see what goes on behind the scenes.

Tickets cost from 13.50 to 16.30 for adults and 10 to 12.60 for children depending on the season. Family tickets for two adults and two children start at 41.50 rising to 53.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

With 125 thrilling rides including the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the UK, nine other roller coasts and a wide range of other attractions, Blackpool Pleasure beach promises to deliver a grand day out for all.

The site also includes its own four-star hotel - the perfect place to stay if you want the fun to carry on long after the rides have been shut down.

Tickets for the beach are significantly cheaper when you purchase them online. Wristbands for unlimited rides cost 25 while two-day wristbands cost 45. Family wrist bands, for two adults and two children under the age of 12, cost 86.

Gulliver's World.

Aimed at children aged between two and thirteen, Gulliver's World contains a number of exciting themed zones, each filled with rides, shows, attractions and eating places. Made with the English weather in mind, more than 40% of all the rides are indoors or undercover, so a rainy day need not be a washout.

A family-run business, all the Gulliver's theme parks in the UK are gear towards providing entertainment that families can enjoy together. Day tickets cost 14.95 for adults and children, while family tickets are available for 59.

The park opens at 10.30am each day and closes between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, depending on the time of year.

Blue Planet Aquarium.

Europe's biggest collection of sharks is the highlight of the Blue Planet Aquarium's collection. See the various 10-foot long specimens up close or, if you're feeling brave enough, take a dive in the pool with them!

For a more gentle encounter, check out the interactive rock pools. You will also learn all about coral reefs and get a chance to see otters, flesh-eating piranhas, seahorses, starfish and crocodiles - more than 700 species in all.

Open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm, tickets for the aquarium cost 15 for adults and 11 for children aged 14 and under.
