I WRITE with reference to the campaign for a school crossing outside Blessed Edward Jones Catholic High School.
I believe I was one of the first people to sign the petition on this matter and now have grave reservations about doing so.
Over the last three years I have either walked or cycled down Cefndy Road twice a day for five days a week.
During school ti
me the road is really not that busy and is quite easily passible.
The real problems occur at school opening and closing times and are not due to the fact that a crossing is not in place, but more to the fact that parents from the school double park all over the road.
The problems outside schools in Rhyl have a common cause.
They are caused by irresponsible parents, some who simply choose to disregard parking restrictions and some who park irresponsibly (ie double parking).
The real remedy for the problem can only be found in making sure that parents who feel the need to drive their children to and from school are made aware of the safety issues when parking outside schools.
This of course will not be an easy task. After a recent sweep of the anti-social element who illegally park their cars outside Llewelyn School, they have now returned to ensure that the children coming out of the school are put at extra risk by these lazy and anti-social parents.
While writing on this issue, may I applaud the actions of Cllr Brian Blakeley, who single handedly told these parents what he thought about their irresponsible behaviour.
The best form of action to improve road safety outside our schools would be to educate these parents and make them aware of the risks they are creating for the kids.
Failing this, the police must take this problem seriously and start imposing traffic protocol on the irresponsible drivers.
