The inspiring true story of radical factory workers in the 1960s will be brought to life in Rhyl through song next month.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Dagenham sewers' 1968 strike, which led to the Equal Pay Act, Rhyl and District Musical Theatre Company (RADMTC) will host a three-night run of dazzling dance and mesmerising musical numbers.

The strike of sewing machinists in the Ford Dagenham factor in East London returned to public attention in 2010 with the Nigel Cole film Made in Dagenham, starring Bob Hoskins and Miranda Richardson, that won four BAFTA nominations for its take on the pivotal moment.

Taking their cues from the 2014 West End smash of the same name, RADMTC will present the timeless struggle of revolutionary Essex women to life with show-stopping panache.

The players will transport the audience to Essex 1968. Like millions of other working women, Rita O’Grady is just trying to get her husband out of bed, get the kids off to school and get to work at the factory on time.

But things get a little more complicated when it is revealed the girls in the stitching room of the car plant will have their pay grade dropped to unskilled.

This inspiring tale sees Rita find a well of strength she never knew she had, as she leads her friends in a battle against the might of Ford and the corruption of the union supposed to protect them.

As the girls’ inspiring journey gets bigger than anyone could have imagined, the pressure is too much for some, but can Rita keep up the fight and the happy home she’s worked so hard for?

Taking on the role of Rita, made famous in the original film by 2018 Academy-nominated actress Sally Hawkins, is Rhyl native Rhiannon Gordon. who will be joined by an ensemble cast of 19.

Kevin Griffiths, chairman of RADMTC, said: “As a charitable organisation, the future of our company depends on the support we receive.

“I would like to encourage everyone to get a ticket and come a long and support local talent’.

Funny, touching and timeless, Made in Dagenham shows how ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they stand together.

The show runs at the Rhyl Little Theatre from Wednesday, May 16 to Saturday, May 19 at 7.30pm, with a matinee showing at 2.30pm on the Saturday. Tickets are priced £6, from rhylmusicaltheatre.co.uk or on 0333 6663366.
