NOW in its third year, the Heart of Wales Walking Festival based at the Lakeside in Llandrindod Wells is hoping to attract walkers from all over Britain and even further afield over the weekend of September 12 to 14.

Last year there was a walker from Australia together with several others from around South Wales, the West Midlands and the borders.

The festival spans three days with a choice of a long, medium or short walk on each day, the walks varying fro
m easy, moderate, energetic and strenuous.

There are also social events on the Friday and Saturday evenings.
On the Friday evening there is to be an illustrated talk on the Drovers Roads given by Dr Colin Hughes at the Rock Park Centre from 7pm. A £1 donation will secure you coffee and biscuits.

All are welcome to attend whether you are a walker or not.

On the Saturday evening there is a Grand Country and Western Evening with Russ Hughes at the Royal British Legion Club in Tremont Road. Tickets are £5 each and again all are welcome.

The festival offers a number of new walks this year among them: following a possible drovers route from Larch Grove, Llandegley to Llandrindod via Howey; a walk from Rhayader to Llandrindod along the Wye valley and over Craig Allt-y-Bont; and a walk from New Radnor to Llandrindod taking in Radnorshire's highest peak, the Great Ros and calling at the Severn Arms, Penybont.

Of the shorter walks, there are the usual favourites: the circular walk from the lake to Shaky bridge with its spectacular views of the Ithon Valley; the Howey pub walk incorporating a pub lunch and a visit to Disserth Church; and the Woodland walk including Bongam Bank and returning via the trig point before descending to the lake.

There is a nominal registration fee of £1 per walk and the registration desk will operate from the boat store underneath the Lakeside Restaurant from 8.30am each day of the festival.

For those walks not starting at the lake, you can register at the start of the walk.

All walks are led by experienced local ramblers who will be delighted to welcome you on a walk.
