ON Saturday, August 30, Knighton Show and Carnival will celebrate its 40th anniversary and it promises to be a bumper day out for all the family.
The ever popular Shire and Heavy Horses competition attracts entrants from all over the country and is now the biggest show of its kind in Wales.
The late David Matthews of Skyborry Farm first introduced Shire Horses to the Show in 1970. At tha
t time there were only four exhibitors.
The heavy horses entries have dramatically increased over the past few years. Now there will be 20 exhibitors showing over 30 horses.
These magnificent animals dressed in their traditional harnesses and brasses, also form a colourful and spectacular part of the mid day procession as they parade through the streets.
The day starts at 10am in the horse rings with many events including show jumping and gymkhana. The ever popular Dog Show runs through the afternoon with several classes to appeal to dog lovers.
Entertainment will be provided by an enthralling acrobatic display, Meirion Owen and the Quack Pack, Dancing Dogs, belly dancers, axe racing and marching bands. Also on display will be vintage vehicles and classic cars. With a tug of war competition, five-a-side football, a climbing wall and sledge slide there will be plenty to do.
In the Drill Hall will be a display of model railways and the Community Centre will house the craft and horticultural exhibits.
Don't miss the carnival processions – the first at 12.30pm and the next at 8.30pm with the theme "40 years Fact or Fiction" – followed by a firework display on Bryn-y-Castle sponsored by Coinspinners.
Guests include dignitaries from Varades, Knighton's twinned town in France.
