The end of the academic year and the start of the summer holidays is always a significant occasion at Rhyl High School, it is both a time to reflect and a time to celebrate, and this year was no exception.

It is always with a sense of pride that reflection inevitably leads to celebration. As we look back over the year, highlight after highlight comes readily to mind. So many in fact that there’s always the danger of overlooking something significant.

Perhaps a good starting point is the last day of term, then working back. The school, as usual, made the last day of term a very special occasion; this year holding a carnival as well as hosting a day packed with fun and activities. Importantly, the rain held off as pupils took on a variety of challenges, such as gladiatorial encounters and a wild west ride on a bucking bull!

Once again, the school prom was a glamorous affair. Everyone who attended look amazing, as did the hall. Full marks to everyone involved the dressing the tables and decorating and transforming the assembly hall into the Mad Hatter’s Tea party.

And we can’t move on from the prom without a special mention for the excellent Beatles tribute band The Cavernites.

From the dancefloor to the dance stage; the school where able to send a strong dance-focused representation to the Denbighshire Eisteddfod, with each and every pupil who performed doing the school proud.

Away from the dancefloor and onto the debating floor, and what was felt by those involved to be a real and meaningful debate, took place when Rhyl High School students sat down with representatives from Qualification Wales to discuss how qualifications will be developed for 2025. As a result of that conversation, two of the school’s pupils were invited to join Qualification Wales’ Leaner Advisory Group.

Along with our academic achievements and successes in the performing arts, the school can also boast a long and successful tradition on the sports field.

Adding to that illustrious sporting tradition is our girls’ rugby team, which played its first-ever game this year. It was an outstanding achievement by the girls’, who showed great dedication and commitment to become trailblazers, leading the way for future pupils who wish to play rugby.

We wish them every success next season.

And from field to the court. The school sent a strong squad to compete in the Denbighshire tennis festival.

Everyone at the school was delighted that the school trips have started up again. The Urdd Residential Centre in Cardiff was a chance for our pupils to develop their Welsh language skills and to build confidence in speaking Welsh, whilst participating in fun and educational activities around Cardiff.

Our year 8s enjoyed a residential trip to Glan Llyn participating in adventurous activities.

And last, but not least, the school was delighted to welcome some very special guests, when year 6 pupils visited us for transition week, and we look forward to welcoming them back to Rhyl High in September.

In the meantime, we would like to wish all staff and pupils the most amazing summer holidays.
