MORE than £2,000 was raised from a charity netball tournament, which celebrated the life of a player who died this year.

St Asaph Netball Club hosted the tournament and 10 teams took part: St Asaph, Holywell, Ruthin, Abergele, Holyhead, Rhyl, Conwy, Craig Y Don, Colwyn and Denbigh. Overall winners were Colwyn Bay.

Players raised £1,915 and Halifax (Lloyds Banking Group) bank donated £500, making a grand total of £2415, which will be donated to mental health charity Young Minds.

The tournament was held in memory of Sian Compton, who died on January 5 this year. She was described as a "fantastic" netball player and a "genuine and caring person".

St Asaph Netball Club treasurer Hayley Jones said: "Sian was an enthusiastic and considerate team member.

"She played either centre or wing-attack but would have played any position if the team needed it.

"She put her all into every match and training sessions, pushing hard and running for every ball.

"She played for St Asaph Lighting. She was a key member when it came to raising funds for the club and would always be part of our social events."

The tournament attracted 70 players, as well as supportive family members and friends.

Hayley added: "It was a fabulous success. The atmosphere was fun, although there is always a competitive atmosphere on court.

"The penultimate match of pool B was very tense.

"We are considering making the tournament an annual event, picking a different charity each year.

"We were fortunate to have Sian’s family there to see for themselves the overwhelming support from both the local community and the netball community."

Will Robinson, community fundraising officer for Young Minds, said: "This is absolutely incredible fundraising, such a significant donation will make a real difference in our fight for young people’s mental health."
