YOUNG homeless people from Rhyl have been helping to design new leaflets of information about a scheme where they live.
Young people from the Y Dyfodol/The Futures Project in the town are among those who have contributed to a range of leaflets covering supported accommodation throughout North Wales run by the Clwyd Alyn Housing Association, part of the Pennaf Housing
Group.
Project Worker Scott Robinson is usually based in Flint, but he travelled to Rhyl as part of a project to involve residents at all the sites in the design of new leaflets.
Residents filled in questionnaires about the scheme and, together with staff, chatted with Scott to make sure the new leaflets would reflect real experiences of the people who use the facilities.
Thanks to his project work Scott was able to use direct quotes from residents together with his factual information and photographs to design a three-fold leaflet available in both Welsh and English for each of the schemes.
Scott said: “I jumped at the chance to get out and about meeting with all the residents and other staff.
“Their contribution was vital and really helpful.”
Kevin Hughes, director of Care and Support for Clwyd Alyn Housing Association said that he was really impressed with the outcome.
“Right from the outset we felt it was really important to include the views of residents in any new information we provide..“
The leaflet project has now been nominated the prestigious national awards organised by TPAS Cymru, the Welsh Tenant Participation Advisory Service, and Scott is looking into the possibility of creating a DVD featuring residents about the information gathered from all the projects in North Wales.
Y Dyfodol provides safe temporary accommodation for people between the ages of 16 and 25 who are homeless and in need of housing related services.
The project’s aim is to enable individuals to access employment or training and move on to permanent accommodation and independent living.
