THE efforts of people in South West Rhyl to make a real difference to their community were rewarded during a recent awards ceremony.
Hosted by the local Communities First Team, The team, which has been partnered by The Co-operative since 2006, has made great progress in the area by supporting and working alongside local groups and encouraging them to take ownership of projects tha
t improve their community.
More than 25 awards were presented during the evening to more than 80 residents.
The South West Rhyl Parent, Baby and Toddler group picked up two awards for the hard work of local mums who keep the Wednesday sessions going every week. The group has also secured additional funding to continue providing free healthy breakfasts for the youngsters and to run day trips during the summer.
Young people from Marsh Youth Group were recognised for their voluntary work with the elderly. While some ran an inter-generational lunch during school holidays, providing an affordable meal for residents, others tended gardens for pensioners and disabled residents.
The South West Rhyl Over-50s group, which meets on Tuesdays at the Rugby Club, picked up an award for providing a range of social activities, and a lunch club for over 60 members each week.
Further awards were presented to the Kids Fun Club for giving children with special needs a weekly group to attend, and to Rhyl South West Central Residents Associations Volunteers for their efforts to keep the Botanical Gardens café up and running and improving the gardens for visitors and local people.
Communities First Community Development Worker Emma Osborne said: "We had a full house at the awards ceremony and it gave the local community the chance to hear about all the hard work that's been done by individuals and groups and also how the Communities First team can help.
"We hope it has encouraged more people to get involved so if anyone is interested in helping out, they should contact us at the Communities First office."
