A YOUNGSTER from Rhyl has scooped a top award from the motor industry.
Josh Custy has won the student of the year title while following a course a course with the Institute of the Motor Industry.
Five students from across the UK were short-listed as finalists for each of the 2008 IMI Outstanding Achievers' Awards, and
Josh was the most outstanding student between the ages of 14 and 16.
Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl's Centre for Automotive Technology, where Josh is completing his training, came in the top five, from a network of over 400 approved centres, for the national Centre of the Year award.
Tim Peel, Deputy Director of Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl said Josh came to Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl as a 14 year old on a vocational course for two days per week as part of the 14 - 19 provision and a link with Rhyl High School and was the first in the group to complete all paper-based, online and practical assessments.
He achieved three GCSE passes in maths, English and science and after completing his course was given a work experience at Trefnant Garage. They were so impressed that they offered him a full-time position.
Garage owner Lyn Morga said: "We are delighted for Josh and his family. The motor industry is one of the most dynamic, exciting, challenging and important sectors of the UK economy, and needs highly capable young people like Josh to join it."
Josh received a glass trophy, framed certificate and a cheque for £200 from HRH Prince Michael.
