And for Mat it was a record-breaking effort as he set a new mark for the highest sum raised for the charity from a single sponsored event.
Mat, a director of Anwyl Construction, teamed up with a couple of ex-Rhyl Rugby Club team mates, Graham Maxwel
l and Mark Thomas and together the three amigos hope to raise more than £25,000 for Ty Gobaith, the only hospice for children with life-limiting illnesses in North Wales.
Mat handed his contribution, £15,500, over to appeals manager Sarah Kearsley-Wooller at a special ceremony recently and admitted that it was the bravery of the youngsters at Ty Gobaith that kept him going on the 26.2 mile course which finishes in Central Park.
And it was one of those courageous young people, 16-year-old Scott Lee, who received the cheque.
Mat, 36,said: "I really hit the wall at 20 miles but the thought of all the money I had raised and the bravery of young people like Scott at Ty Gobaith meant I had to finish – I couldn't let them down.
Rhyl-based Anwyl Construction has been a major sponsor of Hope House Children's Hospices, which run Hope House in Oswestry and Ty Gobaith in Conwy.
Last year they built a summer house in the grounds of Ty Gobaith in the Conwy Valley and they also paid £1500 for a trailer donated for auction by Ifor Williams Trailers while they are also the main sponsors of Ty Gobaith Ball on May 17.
Mat added: "As always we are delighted to support the work being done by Ty Gobaith and Hope House.
"What they do is truly inspirational and so is the courage and determination of the children and their familes that benefit from the practical and emotional support that the hospices provide.
